Sun Screen

I love to read cookbooks because sometimes I find the most unexpected things. This was the case when I was paging through Ani Phyo's; Ani's Raw Food Asia. This cook book contains much more than recipes for East-West fusion dishes, it also has some very useful tips for reducing exposure to chemicals in your day to day life while taking a truly holistic approach to health and wellness.

We receive a lot of mixed messages when it comes to sun exposure.  Is sun block good or bad for you?  Does sun block reduce your body's ability to make Vitamin D?  How much sun is too much?  Should sun block be applied every day?

Click Read More to see the complete post.

We all must answer these questions for ourselves.  I have decided not to use commercial sun block products to limit my exposure to harmful chemicals.  But I also don't want to leave my skin completely exposed to the damaging effects of the sun.  Ani Phyo to the rescue!  Ani provided information that allowed me to create my own sunscreen.  Ani states that sesame seed oil naturally blocks about 30% of the sun's rays.  Helichrysum essential oil is effective as a sunscreen and aloe vera juice soothes and moisturizes.

Helichrysum oil is not cheap.  I found this tiny (1 dram) bottle for $28 at Amazon.  I liked the scent better than other brands I have tried.

Organic sesame seed oil was $13 for 8.5 ounces.

If you have an aloe vera plant you can harvest your own gel or purchase it ready made at Mountain Rose herbs for about $5.50 for 16 ounces.

A super easy way to make a basic sunscreen is to add the ingredients to a dropper bottle and shake;

2 TBS sesame seed oil
1/2 TBS aloe vera gel
3 - 10 drops of helichrysum essential oil (strength varies based on brand)

Rub a small amount on exposed skin.  It starts out felling oily but after a bit soaks in nicely.

Other ingredients with sun blocking proprieties that Ani suggests are chamomile essential oil, coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil.

It is recommended that you reapply hourly.

I have been using this blend this spring and have avoided painful burns. Common sense is also required - don't expose your skin for prolonged periods of time.  Cover shoulders with a top and wear a hat that shades your face whenever possible.

Please note: The objective of this blog is to raise awareness of alternative ways to achieve wellness and to empower you to take an active role in your health decisions.  To accomplish this, you will need to explore these subjects in greater depth and then determine what makes sense for your life.  My hope is that this information will inspire you to start your own search into ways to make your life happier, healthier and more fulfilling.
