Early Morning Herbal Encounters

It is a wonderful day when you don't have to get ready for work, but instead can enjoy an early morning walk with your grand-dog.  And today was a wonderful day.

Elderberries ripe and ready for tincturing.

As I walked down our country lane, I noticed a stand of elderberry bushes with ripe berries.  It has been years since I have been able to pick ripe berries before the birds have devoured them.

Never one to miss an opportunity to wildcraft herbs, I stepped into the tall grass and a sting on my ankle let me know I had made contact with my herbal friend, stinging nettle.

Looking around the area I spotted jewel weed which I just identified this summer.  I remembered that in addition to neutralizing newly exposed poison ivy contact, jewel weed also soothes the sting of nettles and insect bites.

While holding a dog leash and a bouquet of elderberries in one hand, I reached down and picked several jewel weed leaves with the other hand, gave them a squeeze,  and rubbed the smashed leaves against my leg.  Almost instantly the sting was gone and I was on my way home to make a jar of elderberry tincture.

I am always amazed at the plant medicines and remedies that are within easy reach as we go through the day to day routines in our lives.  Our challenge is teaching ourselves to identify plants and learning their gifts.  Once you have done so you understand that a living pharmacy is at your finger tips.

Please note: The objective of this blog is to raise awareness of alternative ways to achieve wellness and to empower you to take an active role in your health decisions.  To accomplish this, you will need to explore these subjects in greater depth and then determine what makes sense for your life.  My hope is that this information will inspire you to start your own search into ways to make your life happier, healthier and more fulfilling.
