Making your own lip balm can be fun, easy, and a great way to avoid synthetic chemicals and save money to boot. I love using ingredients from my backyard and this simple recipe includes honey, which my husband Bill harvested this fall from our hives.
This lip balm recipe has a sweet taste and the mint flavored essential oils give your lips a nice tingle.

Honey Mint Lip Balm
2 TBS almond oil (you can also use jojoba oil or castor oil)
1/2 TBS bees wax pastilles
1 tsp raw honey
5 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops spearmint essential oil
- Pour the oil and bees wax into a small glass measuring cup and set the cup in a pan of water.
- Heat the water over a low flame and stir with a chop stick or wooden skewer until the bees wax has melted.
- Remove the measuring cup from the pan of water.
- Drop in the essential oils and stir.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes than whisk in the honey until it is incorporated. (To keep the beneficial enzymes in the honey you will want the temperature under 104 degrees F when the honey is added.)
- Pour the mixture into small tins or glass containers.
- Allow the balm to rest for 2 hours to harden and blend.
- Apply a small dab to your lips and enjoy!
Tips
- Use castor oil if you want a super shiny finish.
- Try using fruity essential oils, like sweet orange, grapefruit or lemon to make different lip balm flavors.
- Adjust the amount of oil if you would like to change the consistency; more oil will make a softer balm, while less oil will make a firmer product.
