Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health

Although I have collected quite a few herbal medicine publications, my "go to" book for all maladies requiring herbal care is Rosemary Gladstar's book; Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health.

The author is one of the leading herbal teachers in North America with over 30 years of teaching experience.

In this book she shares information and recipes which she organizes in these chapters;
  1. Eco-Logical Herbalism
  2. A Prescription for Life
  3. Taming Stress and Anxiety
  4. Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments
  5. Recipes for Radiant Beauty
  6. For Children
  7. For Women
  8. For Men
  9. For Elders
The Herbal Apothecary section provides specific information for a number of commonly used herbs from Anise to Yohimbe.  Pictures are included for some of the herbs, and you may be surprised to find that the pesky weed in your yard or garden actually has medicine value!

The Art of Making Herbal Remedies provides instructions for sourcing, selecting, and storing herbs, making herbal teas, syrups, candy, infused oils, salves, tinctures, liniments, powders, capsules and pills.  This "how to" guide is vital for beginning herbalists, and the $9.83 price tag at Amazon makes this book a real bargain.  The instructions are well organized and the writing style makes comprehension easy.

I use the index to look up the condition I need to treat or the herb I want to utilize.  The index also includes the recipes by their descriptive names.

When I am studying herbal medicine, I want to not only to know what herb to use for a particular ailment, but also why I am using the herb.  Rosemary does a wonderful job explaining the condition and the impact of using a particular herb.  For example, there is a section on healthy menstruation which outlines the monthly cycle and suggests (among many other things) using herbs rich in calcium and magnesium to prevent menstrual distress.

Sometimes I just sit down and read a section to gain background about the particular situation I want to treat or improve.

This book provides information on how to prevent illness by supporting the body's innate ability to heal, using a holistic approach that stresses healthy lifestyle practices, along with the use of herbs.

The Radiant Beauty chapter provides recipes for a facial scrub, astringent toners, facial cream, and powders.  There is a section on hair care that includes recipes for shampoos, hair rinse and conditioners, and instructions for using henna.

If you are just beginning to practice herbal medicine, it may take some time to collect the herbs listed in the recipes.  Some like dandelion, burdock, nettle, oatstraw and horsetail you can find growing wild in Minnesota and others such as lemon balm, feverfew, and chamomile can be grown in your garden. Herbs that do not grow in our climate like; ginseng, licorice, and crampbark can be ordered from Mountain Rose Herbs.

This book is one of my all time favorites and I highly recommend it.
